IRS Tax Liens and your Credit Score
Tax liens are one of the most difficult credit issues for a consumer to overcome. It reflects as a derogatory mark on your credit report and can lower your credit score significantly. However, for federal tax liens, there is hope. In 2011, the IRS introduced the Fresh Start Program which gives the consumer the opportunity to have federal liens released and removed from your credit report. Here’s how: Determine if you qualify. If the debt is $50,000 or less and you have either paid the debt in full or have made at least three direct debit payments as an arrangement with the IRS. Request a release of your tax lien. Complete Form 12277, Application for the Withdrawal of Filed Form 668(Y), Notice of Federal Tax Lien (Internal Revenue Code Section 6323(j)). Inform the credit bureaus. Once you receive a notice of release from the IRS, send a copy to each of the credit bureaus with a letter requesting the removal of the tax lien from your credit report. Although the credit bureaus are not obligated to remove federal liens, it is worth your time and effort to send the request to remove the liens as this could raise your credit score exponentially. Remember to always send any correspondence to the credit bureaus via certified mail/return receipt.
